The overall odds of winning any prize are approximately 1:4.

"On the evening of February 12, 2010, the eyes of the world will be on us as we celebrate Canada at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony. VANOC is proud to partner with BCLC to give British Columbians a chance to attend this extraordinary event, while helping our kids and amateur athletes have increased access to sports", said John Furlong, CEO of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC).

Over the next two years, BCLC will offer British Columbians the chance to win thousands of tickets to the 2010 Winter Games by playing SportsFunder lottery games. The weight of an Olympic and Paralympic medal around their neck symbolizes the dreams not only of the athlete, but also their families and their communities and their achievement inspires so many. Standing on the podium to accept an Olympic or Paralympic medal is truly a moment without measure," said Cathy Priestner Allinger, VANOC's Executive Vice President of Sport, Paralympic Games and Venue Management, herself a Canadian silver medallist in speed skating at the Innsbruck 1976 Olympic Winter Games.

Vancouver 2010 is looking for an artist, designer or creative teams to work with VANOC to design inspiring, timeless medals for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games – medals that reflect the determination and heart of the athletes who will win those medals in 2010. An Evaluation Team will review submissions and successful applicants will be asked to provide concept designs. The design concepts will then be reviewed by VANOC and approved by the Board of Directors. VANOC will present the medal design to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) for review and final approval.

The Royal Canadian Mint , a Vancouver 2010 Official Supporter, will manufacture the medals. The Mint will be involved in the design process, providing production expertise and ensuring the medals can be produced at the highest level of quality. Teck Cominco , also an Official Supporter of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, will supply the gold, silver, bronze and other metals used in the production of the Olympic and Paralympic medals.

The design process will involve five phases and is expected to take up to eight months. In addition to the medals, designs are also required for the accompanying ribbon and medal containers.

The Mint will produce a total of 867 competition medals for the 2010 Winter Games. Of these, 549 competition medals will be produced for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, 183 each of gold, silver and bronze. For the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games, 318 competition medals will be produced, 106 each of gold, silver and bronze.

The closing date for the submission of proposals is 30 January 2008. The design contract(s) are expected to be awarded in late February 2008.

(Credit: IPC. They invest a massive amount of money in the Olympics, and viewership is falling, at least partially because results are so easily accessible online. Liu Zhihua was fired because of corruption and leading a decadent life:

A terse report Monday by the state-run Xinhua News Agency said Beijing Vice Mayor Liu Zhihua’s “wrongdoings” were “quite serious” and merited his removal Sunday.

[…]

In its brief statement, Xinhua didn’t directly link Liu’s sudden dismissal with his work coordinating the construction of the 31 venues in the Beijing area. It said only that Liu, a 57-year-old Communist Party official from Liaoning province in the northeast, was sacked for “corruption and degeneracy.”

A Hong Kong daily newspaper with close ties to Beijing’s rulers, Wen Wei Po, said Liu maintained several mistresses and built a personal entertainment center, replete with closed-circuit television cameras, in the outlying Beijing district of Huairou. It said Liu took “large sums” in bribes from foreign businessmen, and later denied them land that he had promised. The foreigners then complained to the Communist Party’s Central Disciplinary Committee, the party’s highest organ for investigating corruption, the paper said.

Liu had been seen in public as recently as May 29, when he went to the site in the Beijing district of Fengtai where laborers are erecting a softball stadium.

He was in charge of city planning, construction, transportation and all sports activities.

In a sign of the case’s sensitivity, censors purged any commentary about Liu’s firing from Internet chat rooms.

Olympic fundraising

This is a fascinating article dealing with the ways Beijing is coming up with the money for the 2008 Summer Olympics:

Enterprises from both home and abroad are jockeying for positions on different rosters connected to the Games, in the hope of marketing their products and enhancing brand awareness through this extraordinary opportunity.

It is not only corporate titans, but also Olympic officials who have are keeping a close eye on the bottom line, especially since costs have soared in the wake of the September 11 terror attacks in the United States.

“Without the support of the business community, without its technology, expertise, people, services, products, telecommunications, its financing - the Olympic Games could not and cannot happen,” says IOC President Jacques Rogge of the importance of Olympic marketing.

Check out the next College Bowl Schedule at Docsports.com

One of my friends, Awful Announcing, would definitely love this website. It enables you to reach your targeted prospects in a manner and using a tone that really connects and reverberates with customers and potential customers. What’s more, it’s a very low cost method of communicating with your target prospects, whether you’re announcing a new product, reinforcing your brand, or simply staying in touch to keep your business at the top of their minds.

You don’t have to be an expert writer or expert marketer to successfully make more money using business blogging. In fact, some of the most successful businesses approach their business blogging as a friendly, informal conversation with their target
audience. No hard sell, no pushy sales tactics, just a normal conversation that serves to build and strengthen customer relationships.

Of course, you can’t just start a business blog and expect the profits to start rolling in. It takes a bit of planning, time, and energy to understand and apply the right tools to make your business blogging efforts as effective as possible, right from the start. It’s easy, though, if you have the right information at your fingertips.

Setting up your blog is not all that difficult, but you do have to put some time into determining the best place to put it. Some blog hosting services charge a fee, others are low or no cost, and you always have the option of hosting your blog right on your own business website.

So how do you decide? Start by thinking very carefully about your budget, your own computer skills, and your readiness to learn some basic blogging software. Just as importantly, though, also have to decide how you plan to keep your business blog current and interesting. Updating your blog has to become a scheduled part of your business operation if it is to be truly effective. Another consideration is assigning responsibility for writing blog content and/or actually updating the blog

Beijing Claims Computers Hacked

fficial Acknowledgment of Inferiority?! -- Beijing Claims Computers Hacked

-- Micky's humble opinion: Like China's faked products, Chinese
government's imitation statement ignored some important facts: China is
the only country built a "Great Fire Wall" named "Golden Shield" , China
is the only country who deployed a net-army numbering in hundreds of
thousands, are these "extra efforts" with chinese characteristics all for
nothing? --

Beijing Claims Computers Hacked
By Xiao Jing
Voice of America
Sep 15, 2007

Related Articles
- CCP's Cyberattack on U.S. Networks Thursday, September 13, 2007

WASHINGTON D.C.—China's Ministry of Information Industry recently
claimed that large amounts of state and military confidential data were
stolen through the Internet. Foreign enemies are using the Internet as a
major destructive tool.

However, dissidents think the statement is an excuse to intensify
Beijing's control over the Internet and to repudiate western countries
recent accusations of Beijing hacking into western governments websites.

In the September issue of Forum for Chinese Party and Government Staff,
an official publication of the China Central Party School, Lou Qinjian,
Deputy Minister for Information Industry, said in an article that the
Internet has become foreign enemies' major tool for political
infiltration and hacking into high priority departments.

Lou also claims that in recent years large amounts of confidential
documents from the Party, the government, and the military have been
stolen through the Internet and have caused Beijing great harm. Lou
declined to give details of the espionage but urged Beijing to take
sweeping measures to monitor all Internet information in order to stop
computer threats.

Recently Beijing denied western media's reports accusing them of hacking
into government computers in the U.S., Germany, and England. Some
observers believe Beijing's accusation of western hackers at this
particular moment is to denounce western media reports and find an
excuse to further control Internet information.

Huang Qi, administrator of 64tianwang.com and renowned dissident, said
Beijing's statement of confidential information leaking through Internet
isn't logical, "A lot of cases of military corruption and human rights
violation against veterans are exposed on the Internet. The authorities
claimed that is 'leaking military secrets.' Authorities often
oversimplify the classification and eventually put public information or
human rights violation news as confidential, and suppress it".

An observer said human rights ideology is widespread in China now and
people want to participate in politics. The arrival of the Internet
helps people to voice their opinion more powerfully. Beijing senses this
trend is threatening its dictatorship and has to continue to intensify
its suppression of information freedom.

Huang said that the Internet provides a powerful publication tool for a
democratic movement in China. It's getting harder for Beijing to block
any information it wants. Technically China can maximize its suppression
of freedom on the Internet but not beyond a certain point; this
suppression will harm China's business and information technology, and
retard the development of the nation's economy.

"The Internet is a double-edged sword. With proper use, authorities can
push society to greater prosperity and civilization. At the same time,
information flow will promote democracy in China and destroy the Chinese
Communist Party's totalitarianism," said Huang.

An analyst said suppressing freedom of information on the Internet is a
clear policy in China and the technology to control the Internet is
maturing quickly. Freedom of speech on the Internet in China will still
be heavily suppressed for a while. However, in the long run, surging
Internet information will crash China's "Internet Berlin Wall."

Beijing makes its move in Latin America

Beijing makes its move in Latin America
Peter Zhang
BrookesNews.Com
Monday 10 May 2004
It's been more than four years since I wrote about the danger that Beijing
poses in South and Central America. I stressed at the time that Hutchison
Whampoa is an arm of the Chinese government and that the company's chairman,
Li Ka Shing, was an unofficial government minister.
Despite knowing these facts President Clinton still insisted on the canal
passing into Beijing's hands, even though he knew the company had corruptly
obtained the lease.
China's Defence Minister, Chi Haotian, has said that war with the United
States is inevitable. As Chi well knows there is more than one way to wage
war ? and this is where the canal comes in. It provides Beijing with a base
from which to create enormous mischief for the US while piously claiming
that its presence is merely a commercial one.
The word is out that acting through Castro's agents and Chinese crime lords,
Beijing is already heavily involved in running drugs into the US. To Beijing
drugs are merely another weapon in its unofficial war against the US. Two
other weapons are terrorism and subversion.
Drug revenues were be used to finance terrorists whose activities will, it
was hoped, destabilise the region, particularly Mexico, thus tying up US
military and intelligence resources. (Beijing also knows it can count on
America's mainstream media to sympathetically report on left-wing terrorist
activities).
Much of this has already come to pass. One needs to look no further than
Colombia and Venezuela to see that Marxist subversives and terrorists are
well organized, ruthless and on the march.
I remarked that that it was being said in certain Beijing quarters that
Mexico would play a central role in this strategy. It was assumed that
encouraging political and social turmoil in Mexico would, for example, spur
many more Mexicans to seek sanctuary in the US, forcing Washington to
strengthen its southern boarder while antagonizing Mexico City in the
process.
Beijing believed that a flood of Mexicans immigrants would provoke a
backlash which in turn would whip up anti-American feeling south of the
border, never a difficult task. It never occurred to Beijing that America
would tolerate a massive flow of illegal Mexican immigrants.
The central player ? perhaps I should say puppet ? in Beijing's scheme is
Fidel Castro. I did say at the time that an official had confided in me that
Beijing has successfully enlisted Fidel Castro as an ally and that he was to
be heavily supplied with weapons and cash. South America was to be the
weapons eventual destination.
Once again it has come to pass. (I'm feeling quite prophetic). The cash was
be used, along with drugs, to finance revolutionary groups, buy off
officials, finance subversion and corrupt politicians. This is precisely
what Castro's embassy officials were doing in Mexico City and that is why
Vincente Fox had them expelled.
I was also told that Chinese intelligence had invested a great deal in a
Venezuelan army or former army officer who is linked to the DGI (Castro's
KGB). Unfortunately, the official was not prepared to say anything further
on the subject. It no longer matters as we now know for certain that the
former army officer is Chavez.
I explained at the time that rumour had it that Beijing initially intended
to form a Latin-American triangle consisting of Cuba, Venezuela and Colombia
with Castro at the apex and Panama in the centre.
The triangle was to be the heart of the Beijing's plans for the region.
Despite the fact that some thought the plan too bold, at least at this
stage, the regime has become even more ambitious, hoping to extend the
triangle so that it includes Brazil and the Argentine.
It believes that Iraq and the war on terror will prove so much of a
distraction that for the US that it will not be able to direct the necessary
intelligence resources to the region. However, there are still those who
think that Beijing should tread carefully.
They point out that Castro is aging and his regime is highly unpopular. They
feel that should he die or fall seriously ill the regime would be swept away
by a popular revolt with embarrassing results for Beijing.
Others have counter with the argument that the machinery of repression is so
entrenched in Cuba and the populace so demoralised that Beijing's people
will have no problem in taking the reins of power. In any case, should the
worse happen any evidence connecting Beijing to subversion and drug running
would be quickly destroyed.
Moreover, these people argue that there is absolutely nothing to fear from
America's mainstream media which is still besotted with Castro as is the
Black Caucus. As evidence for this view they cite not only the media's
hostility toward President Bush but their attempts to undermine victory in
Iraq. So why should the media treat South America any differently from Iraq?
It's particularly revealing that Beijing appears convinced that most
Democratic members of Congress and the Senate would play down any
connections Beijing establishes with Castro and that they can be counted on
to dismiss China's presence in the region as hysteria just as they dismiss
Castro's subversive activities
Beijing's strategy is not primarily one of establishing pro-Chinese regimes
but of creating a massive running sore that will drain US political and
military resources. This, the regime reasons, will weaken America's Asian
presence and so make it easier for China to drive her out of the
Pacific-Asian region, leaving Hawaii as its only Pacific base.
This is not a fantasy. Why else did Beijing provide missile know-how and
nuclear weapons technology to the likes of North Korea, Pakistan, Iran and
Libya? Because it would generate political tension and fuel conflicts that
would tie up US military resources.
Four years ago I wrote:
"? why did Clinton allow the canal to fall into Beijing's hands? Because,
incredible as this will seem, he thinks of Beijing as a 'strategic partner'
of sorts and not a potential enemy. Clinton belongs to that peculiar school
of thought that sees conflict, particularly war, as the tragic outcome of
misunderstandings between basically decent and reasonable people ? except
for fascists, of course, meaning those who challenge his beliefs and
premises. Impervious to reality, those who cling to this suicidal-like
vision accuse their critics of bad faith and dismiss their patriotic
warnings as alarmist, ridiculous, hateful and so on".
As Islamofascists strive to demoralize allied troops the American media and
many Democratic politicians and their followers direct their anger and hate
not against those who murder American troops but against President Bush,
just as Beijing strategists predicted.
The only thing Beijing's warlords understand and respect is power and the
will to use it. America still has the power and, under Bush, has
demonstrated the will to use it. So guess whom Beijing is rooting for in the
coming presidential election? Clue: it isn't Bush.

Welcome to travel in China, welcome to Beijing

Hi! At times in history, the capital was declared to be NanJing
rather than BeiJing, according to whether the then current powerbase
lay to the north or south of China.

'YanJing' is another popular informal name for Beijing, a reference to
the ancient State of Yan that existed here during the Zhou Dynasty.
For example, there is the locally brewed 'Yanjing Beer'.

Size and Location

China is bordered by the countries of Indochina to the south, has
Russia and Mongolia to the north, rising-star India to the south west,
and Korea and Japan to the east.

Beijing's Latitude: 39° 55' North
Beijing's Longitude: 116° 23' East

Beijing is an independently administered municipal district, situated
in the northeastern part of China at an elevation of 43.5m above sea
level. Beijing municipality is centered around the capital.

Today, Beijing City covers an area of about 7,000 square kilometers
running 38 kilometers from ShiJingShan in the west to TongXian in the
east.

Beijing Municipality (equivalent to a province in China's
administrative structure) has a total area of 17,000 sq km (about
6,500 sq miles), stretching 160 kilometres from east to west and over
180 kilometres from north to south. The population is about 15 million
of which about 10 million have permanent resident status.

Beijing Municipality borders Hebei Province to the north, west, south
and, for a small section, in the east, and Tianjin Municipality to the
southeast.

Beijing is China's second largest city in terms of population, after
Shanghai.

Beijing is widely recognized as the political, educational and
cultural center of China, whereas Shanghai and Hong Kong predominate
in the economic field.

The 38 kilometer long Chang'An (Eternal Peace) boulevard that runs
from east to west through central Beijing concentrates on state,
political and economic affairs. The central areas around the Palace
Museum (Forbidden City) and city gates as well as the lakes -
ZhongNanHai, BeiHai and HouHai - have been designated as protected
landmark districts that retain the features of Old Beijing.

Transportation

Beijing is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads
and expressways entering and leaving it in all directions. It is also
the focal point of many international flights to China.

Following economic reforms, Beijing has evolved to be an important
transportation hub. Sadly, although it was probably necessary, most of
Beijing's city wall was removed between 1965 and 1969 to make way for
the construction of the 2nd Ring Road.

The traffic network now consists of five concentric ringroads (the
outer three are expressways), 28 radial roads (9 express ways), and
underground and suburban railways that are being further developed to
improve links from the center with outlying areas and surrounding
towns, plus several long distance railway routes and an international
airport.

Following the economic reforms of Deng XiaoPing, the urban area of
Beijing expanded greatly. Formerly within the confines of the 3rd Ring
Road, the urban area of Beijing is now pushing at the boundary of the
recently-constructed 5th Ring Road and even the 6th Ring Road that is
currently under construction. Many areas of Beijing that were formerly
farmland have now been developed into residential or commercial
neighborhoods.

Tourism in Beijing

One of the temples at the Summer Palace. Meander the expansive grounds
and take a Dragon Boat across the beautiful lake.
Experience the ancient Chinese ideal of harmony between Man and
Nature.
China is one of the world's most visited countries. Tourism is now
increasing rapidly and is forming an ever more important part of the
economy. It has been projected that China may become the world's
number one tourist destination by 2020.
Historical Beijing is a key attraction. The Forbidden City receives
over 10 million visitors each year (foreign and domestic). In 2005,
over 3.6 million foreign tourists visited Beijing, constituting an
increase of 15% from 2004.

With an eye to the future, an increasing number of historical,
cultural and revolutionary sites in Beijing are being renovated and
opened to the public, a process that started long before Beijing won
hosting of the 2008 Olympics.

Time Zone
Beijing's time zone is UTC/GMT +8 hours.

The whole of China shares the same time zone. There is no daylight
saving time (or 'summer time') at the moment.

Beijing Takes Complete Control Over Hong Kong By MARTIN LEE

Beijing Takes Complete Control Over Hong Kong
By MARTIN LEE

The honeymoon is over. Beijing's patience is running out. Hong Kong's
recently re-appointed chief executive, Tung Chee Hwa, is about to
install
the necessary legal mechanisms to enable Beijing to suppress the free
press
and dissident groups in Hong Kong.

After many months of careful planning, a consultation paper entitled
"Proposals to Implement Article 23 of the Basic Law" (Hong Kong's
mini-constitution) was released this week by the chief executive.

Article 23 is the most controversial provision in the Basic Law, which
was
promulgated by the National People's Congress in Beijing on April 4,
1990.
This was exactly 10 months after the Tiananmen massacre on June 4,
1989, a
bloody crackdown of what was a peaceful student movement for democracy
and
clean government in mainland China, which drew support from almost the

entire population of Hong Kong.

The timing of the passage of the Basic Law was unfortunate, because it
came
at a time when the Beijing leaders were not even sure of their own
ability
to remain in power. So control was the key word, including over Hong
Kong
affairs. Article 23 therefore requires the Hong Kong Special
Administrative
Region to enact laws to prohibit treason, secession, sedition,
subversion
against the Central People's Government, theft of state secrets and to

prohibit local political groups from having any ties with foreign
political
bodies.

This article has the clear potential to enable Beijing to exercise
absolute
control over the mass media as well as all dissident groups in Hong
Kong.
And fear of being prosecuted is likely to cause the local mass media to

practice even more self-restraint.

More than five years have now elapsed since the handover on July 1,
1997,
and Hong Kong has been extremely stable politically without any such
laws.
But Beijing still wants more control. Two months ago, Qian Qichen, the

Chinese vice-premier responsible for Hong Kong affairs, said publicly
that
Article 23 should be implemented now.

Indeed, all the indications are that the Hong Kong government has been
in
close touch and has reached agreement with Beijing over both the
contents
and timetable for the proposed legislation. This is to ensure that what
is
enacted in Hong Kong will not be inconsistent with the laws in mainland

China even though, under the "one country, two systems" policy and the
Basic
Law, Hong Kong should be left to legislate those provisions "on its
own."
Nor is Beijing supposed to have any power of veto over laws enacted by
the
Legislative Council, Hong Kong's legislature.

So the consultation period of three months is but part of a
public-relations
exercise to win the public's support, in order to shut up any concern
that
may be expressed both in Hong Kong and abroad. But the public will not
be
told the entire truth. Instead, the proposals are all couched in broad

principles and without specifics.

Who can ever object to a law of treason which imposes a penalty of life

imprisonment (for there is no capital punishment in Hong Kong) on
anyone who
joins forces with a foreign power to levy war against the People's
Republic
of China and overturn its government?

But in the same breath, there is a proposal to give additional powers
to the
police. These will allow the police, on the decision of a
superintendent, to
break into and search a person's home or office without a sea
rch
warrant for
most of the Article 23 offences, if he reasonably believes that the
investigation of such an offense would be seriously prejudiced without

immediate entry.

The devil is in the details. But for the Hong Kong government to win
public
support, the devil must not be exposed during this consultation period.
And
the public cannot be expected to read the entire document anyway,
particularly in a gloomy economic climate in Hong Kong when people are
more
worried over the possible loss of their jobs and pay cuts.

But a careful reading between the lines reveals a number of time bombs.
The
following are just two examples:

The most hated people in mainland China must be the Falun Gong
followers who
have long been branded as an evil cult, imprisoned and expelled from
China.
The Falun Gong followers in Hong Kong are currently tolerated by the
Hong
Kong government, although some local as well as foreign Falun Gong
practitioners have been recently arrested and prosecuted in the courts.
And
Mr. Tung, protected by privilege during a recent session in the
Legislative
Council, called the Falun Gong an evil cult.

Under the present proposals, so long as Beijing decides and states that
the
Falun Gong "endangers national security" in mainland China, and that
the
Hong Kong Falun Gong is a branch of the mainland group, the Hong Kong
government would have to take action against Falun Gong followers in
Hong
Kong. In other words, the initiative lies with Beijing.

As for the press, take the hypothetical example of a newspaper that
publishes an article stating that a prime commercial site in the
Central
district of Hong Kong presently occupied by the People's Liberation
Army
would soon be released to the Hong Kong government so that it could be

redeveloped into a large office and commercial complex. If such
information
had come from an unauthorized source, then both the newspaper and the
reporter who wrote the article would be committing a criminal offense
under
the new law, which seeks to protect "information relating to relation
between the Central Authorities of the PRC and the HKSAR," and be
liable to
a prison term of up to five years.

These are shocking scenarios for anyone in any country or territory
where
there is supposed to be the rule of law. Many people outside Hong Kong
will
no doubt wonder why Mr. Tung and his government will do this in Hong
Kong.
The answer is simple: Beijing wants it done.

Mr. Tung would not have been given a second term of office on July 1,
but
for the open support given to him by the top three Beijing leaders. And
with
the recent establishment of a so-called accountability system, which
makes
all senior officials accountable to Mr. Tung, who is in turn only
accountable to Beijing, the Hong Kong government will do everything as

directed by their masters in Beijing.

As for the undemocratically constituted legislature, only 20
legislators out
of a total of 60 members will vote against government proposals, and
the
majority of 40 will support them no matter how bad they are. Further,
there
is effectively no possibility of there ever being a fully
democratically
elected legislature in Hong Kong unless Beijing gives the nod, which
will
only happen if the Beijing leaders are confident that the pro-Beijing
political parties will win elections on a one-person, one-vote basis.

The only thing remaining is an independent judiciary -- but what can
the
most independent judge do to protect human rights if the law in fact
gives
those powers to the government? With the passage of these laws under
Article
23 of the Basic Law, Beijing's control over Hong Kong will be complete.

Mr. Lee is chairman of the Democratic Party, a democratically elected
legislator and a former member of the Basic Law Drafting Committee

IOC awards internet rights in China for 2008 Olympics to CCT

The International Olympic Committee ( IOC) announced on Tuesday that CCTV.com, a part of Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, has been awarded the internet and mobile platform exhibition rights within China for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. He arrived yesterday morning aboard a China Southern flight from Guangzhou on a home visit.

Li was invited to act as a supervisor of the airport's services.

Last year, the airport was ninth among the top 10 world airports by passenger traffic, with a passenger transport volume of 48.65 million, according to Geneva-based Airports Council International (ACI) statistics.

"The 50-million mark is a critical point. In the days after it is reached, airport growth would be even faster than before," Professor Li Xiaojin, with the Civil Aviation University of China in Tianjin, told China Daily yesterday.

Citing the results of research on world airports' development, Li explained that airports with such passenger volumes have enough flights to attract even more passengers seeking convenience.

Yang Guoqing, vice-minister of the General Administration of Civil Aviation (CAAC), said yesterday the airport would accommodate an estimated 64 million passengers next year, when Beijing hosts the 2008 Summer Olympics.

"That will place the airport among the world's top five airports by passenger volume," Yang said.

The airport's new third terminal would open in February, making it one of the largest airports in the world. By then, the airport would be able to handle 82 million passengers annually, up from the current capacity of 35.50 million.

Yang denied worries that the airport's passenger flow might drop after 2008, saying his confidence came from two factors: The airport's important location and its push to become a major air hub in the Asia Pacific region.

It is currently the second largest airport in Asia by passenger volume, after Tokyo, with a passenger throughput of 65.81 million, last year.

But it is agreed that the airport still needs to do more to become an international aviation hub.

Sun Defu, a senior official with the Civil Aviation Administration for the North China Area, told China Daily that airport would need to at least improve the transfer service to attract more international travelers.

"The airport should rearrange the flight schedule to solve flight connection problems and help transfer passengers save time," Sun said.

Growth of China's civil aviation sector is among the fastest in the world, and 15 percent of its passenger flow comes through Beijing.
The airport first reached an annual passenger volume of 10 million in 1993 - 35 years after it opened. But the increase from 40 million to 50 million took only two years

form: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/olympics/2007-12/06/content_6302984.htm

Tennis: women's singles Olympic medal 'attainable'

China will strive for medals in both women's singles and doubles events at the Beijing Olympics, national team head coach Jiang Hongwei told a press conference in Guangzhou.

Grand Slam champions Zheng Jie and Yan Zi have re-ignited fans' gold-medal desires on the heels of the record-breaking success of Li Ting and Sun Tiantian at the Athens Games. But Jiang said a singles medal is also at top of his list.

"China's Olympic goal is to win medals in both singles and doubles events," Jiang said. "As long as our players are healthy for the Beijing Olympics, I think the goal is accessible."

The Chinese team had an unlucky year as the team's top players suffered injuries and the losses increased. But now that top players Li Na and Zheng Jie have returned from injury, the team will be at full strength when it begins its final sprint to the Olympics next month.

"Olympics is the number one thing in the next season," Jiang said. "We will have different programs specifically designed for the Beijing Games. Now we have 50 staff members working with our five elite players. I think not even Roger Federer can have so many people serving him."

According to the Olympic rankings system, the top 50 singles players and top 10 doubles players will automatically be on China's roster.

"I hope we will have four players in the singles draw and two pairs in doubles. If we are able to enter with such a massive force, we will have a chance to achieve what we are dreaming of."

The last year has been a bad one for Chinese players, who had made significant progress by winning gold at the Athens Games and winning doubles trophies at the Australian and Wimbledon Opens.

But two-time Grand Slam women's doubles winner Zheng Jie and China's current female No 1 Li Na both missed half of the 2007 season with injuries. Without its leading stars, the rest of the team could not keep up last year's momentum.

The 24-year-old Zheng, who partnered with Yan Zi to win the women's doubles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2006, injured her left ankle in Roland Garros this year and hasn't taken the court since.

To keep his players healthy, Jiang will let the team play fewer tournaments and plans to skip most of the clay-court season.

"We have to pick and choose," he said. "Our Olympic players won't compete in small tournaments anymore as they will focus on Tier I and II events only.

"We won't play the whole clay and grass season because it used to be our most challenging time. The three-day meeting with the Beijing 2008 Organising Committee (BOCOG) was the first held since the IOC visit in August, and was the opportunity to fully appraise the results of the test events held over the past months. The meeting gave the Commission members details of Games preparations as well as status reports on how BOCOG and the local Beijing authorities plan to address matters such as air quality, ticketing and the Olympic Torch Relay.

From Understanding to Operational Reality

“The BOCOG team has once again shown us that they have understood what is needed to organise top quality Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Hein Verbruggen, Chairman of the Coordination Commission. “The feedback that we have been receiving from the International Federations and athletes alike, specifically from their experiences at the test events, shows us that BOCOG has been able to translate that understanding into an operational reality. However, in these final months, the need for continuous action is imperative.”

Athletes’ Review

This week’s meeting also brought IOC Athletes’ Commission representatives to Beijing for a review of service levels for athletes at Games time, including a look at the Olympic Village. Their review is a regular part of Games preparations to ensure that the needs of the athletes are met and conform to the high standards expected from the Olympic Games.

The athletes’ representatives group was made up of Olympians Robert Ctvrtlik (volleyball), Rania Elwani (swimming) and Yaping Deng (table tennis), who were selected by the Commission to independently represent the athletes’ interests.

Hong Kong

Before arriving in Beijing, a delegation from the Coordination Commission also visited the co-host city of Hong Kong, where the Beijing 2008 equestrian events will be held. Members visited both venues in Beas River and Sha Tin. They also held meetings with the Hong Kong Equestrian Company, and representatives of the local government and sports authorities. Following the visits and meetings, the Commission members were all highly impressed by the facilities and services that will await the equestrian community in August 2008.

Beijing 2008
The Games of the XXIX Olympiad – Beijing 2008 will take place from 8 to 24 August 2008. The Games in Beijing will play host to the 28 summer sports currently on the Olympic programme. Approximately 10,500 athletes are expected to participate in the Games with around 20,000 accredited media bringing the Games to the world.

form: http://www.olympic.org/uk/games/beijing/full_story_uk.asp?id=2366

Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Tickets

© BOCOG

14 May 2007

Tickets for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games are now available to Olympic fans worldwide through various channels depending on their country of residence.

Chinese residents wishing to obtain Beijing 2008 Olympic tickets should visit the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) website.

Olympic fans from other countries looking for information regarding Beijing 2008 Olympic tickets should contact the National Olympic Committee (NOC) in their territory of residence.
